How Good Web Design Improves Online Revenue

By Steven Harrison

Nowadays, businesses large and small put up websites to represent their activities to the larger online world. These range from the extremely sophisticated to the very simple. Both can be effective, depending on the size of the business and its activities online and offline. However, web design is often overlooked, which can result in lost revenues and clicks.

Everyone surfs the web in a different way, but some commonalities do exist. Most people, for instance, spend most of their time looking near the top of the page and then scan down for a few brief seconds. Thus, titles and headers are important elements when it comes to conveying what a website offers. These need to be expressive and clear. A frustrated reader will click away almost immediately.

For this reason, placing things on a page in a way that will aid visitors in finding what they want is of utmost importance. With so much information available online, it is easy for visitors to feel overwhelmed and miss what they are looking for. Customers who spend most of their time on the site trying to figure out how to use it will not appreciate the experience. Web designers know how to make sure this doesn't happen. Having test customers give reviews of the site can also give you an idea of how easy the site is to navigate.

Along the same lines, websites need an easy-to-read banner that identifies your company should leave no doubt as to what your company is and what you do. Also, a concise, straightforward menu is essential. This will allow customers to navigate directly to the information they want. Some people may want to visit a brick-and-mortar shop, while others may want to purchase directly or check on a shipment.

Anyone who has pulled up a site only to be bombarded with advertisements unrelated to their search will know how annoying that can be. This is where experienced web designers come in. They can help businesses evaluate how and where to place ads, if applicable. Successful websites make ads visible, but not intrusive.

A clear website is also the result of the graphic elements on the page, like photographs and the colors used for the background and other areas of the site. Some people are tempted to use unique colors, but they shouldn't choose colors that jar or take the visitor's mind off of the company's product or services. Photographs should also not overshadow the content or navigational elements of the page, either, and all text should be comfortably readable.

Each business ultimately has to make its own decision when it comes to how to set up a site. Some companies have in-house teams with the ability to create attractive pages that reach visitors and inform them. Others may find that web design is simply too important and choose outside help. In the end, though, the goal is to direct eyes to the right places to increase revenue and improve customers' experiences.
